When I ask most of them what kinds of pets they are considering they sort of laugh and say that “they are only considering dogs, of course.” I’m not sure what causes this particular response in people, but I have done my best in the past few months and begun speaking up for getting a cat instead of a dog. To Take Care of Cats It’s true that I am a little biased about the benefits of owning a cat over a dog. After all, I have been a cat owner since I was three years old and I am now a cat breeder by profession. I will attempt to keep all of my bias away as I share with you a few great reasons why you should at least consider choosing a cat rather than a dog for your next pet. First, a cat is the perfect pet for many people because they require much less work than dogs. Think about it. Getting a dog requires someone to be home nearly all the time at least for the first few months of owning the dog. With a cat there is no need to potty train them, take them outside, walk them or spend endless hours playing with them. A cat is definitely a more independent animal and the perfect pet for more independent people. Chihuahuas are not deformed, they’re just very small – which may or may not be a good thing and while they can be tiny, they have decent conformation if they are well bred and were not produced to be a ‘teacup’ size, which is a terrible idea for any breed of any size. The dogs with pushed in faces and those with very short legs do have deformities, though they are deliberately bred for. Dogs with pushed in faces ( brachycephalic) generally have breathing issues, sinus trouble, eye problems, along with needing C sections to birth the puppies, which do not often manage to be born the usual way. I do not think any of that is good for the dogs. They can have lots of other problems too, there are genetic disorders found in a lot of purebreds regardless of their faces or leg length. Luxating patellas ( loose knee caps) are common in a lot of smaller breeds and hip dysplasia is common, period. So many dogs have it, purebred and mutts alike. But when it comes to problems that are directly associated with their breed characteristics, there probably aren’t as many as you may think. The issues with respiration, eyes and sinuses are directly linked to the brachycephalic face shape of those breeds, for sure. Dogs with very long backs are quite prone to spinal disc problems and potentially, paralysis. Even dogs that do not have a pushed in face or short upper leg bones or very long backs (Dachshunds, Corgis) , can have various skeletal issues and the larger the dog is, the more likely it is to have hip dysplasia simply because of the size and weight of the animal.
