This is a terrible thing to say, but I do not give, or recommend giving flowers for Valentine’s Day. The flowers are very likely to be old because so many arrangements have to be made that florists start making them as much as two-three weeks ahead of time. They are thrown together as quickly as possible, and will most likely not be as nice as one you would get at another time (except Mother’s Day which is just as bad.) They are kept fresh-looking in refrigerated trucks, but there is a lot of moving them around and they get shoved together. When they get out in room temperature, they don’t last long, sometimes only a couple of days. Then there is the massive amount of deliveries to be made, and those arrangements can get roughed up in transit with all the rush and chaos. If the weather is cold, there is a good chance they will have cold damage too. Besides all that, you will pay much more for flowers then, as at any other time. Get your sweetie something else, and save getting flowers for another time. If nothing else, pity the poor florists who work 16 hour days for at least a week before. It’s hell. Over-rated, over-commercialized, pretty much pointless as well. It is not because I am single and being jealous or hateful towards those that celebrates the day, I feel the same for Christmas(although it is a bit better as it promotes family members to gather together) and Chinese New Year, etc. In the country where I live in, it is the best time for businesses to boom, restaurants would be fully booked, food will be overpriced, hotels will come out with crazily expensive food and room packages, and sadly people go crazy over these things! It is annoying as I don’t see the worth of the effort put in this day, boyfriends are supposed to spend hundreds on a bouquet of roses, and then hundreds again on a set meal in the restaurant, and yes, SET MEALS, not even a decent a la carte, you’re usually given around 3 sets to choose from, and they are overpriced as well. It is the easiest and fastest way for the restaurants to earn money, they only need to buy the ingredients in bulk, cook the same thing, and voila, charging the customers more than double the worth of the food and services. Don’t even think that the waiters or waitresses will give you your well-deserved attention for the money that you’re paying, most of the time in this day they will be running around and it will be impossible for you to even ask for a glass of water. It depends. There are many variables. He may not have known it meant so much to you. This type of lack of communication happens quite frequently. My husband did not often give gifts, because his mother didn’t really care about them. When we were younger, gifts from him meant the world to me. Now that I am 65, they don’t.
