The only thing I have to offer that’s worthwhile, is that even though ManU and City are neighbors (and currently very good), there’s a sociological resentment between Liverpool and ManU that has existed for a century. Off the pitch, in the real world (1893), a canal was finished which (for the first time in hundreds of years), allowed all ships to pass the Liverpool docks and deliver their cargo to the doorsteps of the mills and factories of Manchester. It was progress, but it meant that thousands of Liverpool families were no longer supported by a dockside industry for the first time in many generations. Both cities are a great place to spend time if you’re in the north of England, but both cities have a very legitimate reason to resent one another. Football at its best is a confrontation between two squads who put everything on the line to bring the fans and the team a triumph; for many, many decades now, Liverpool and ManU have been two of the most extraordinary clubs in the world, while City has generally been an afterthought. So this all boils down to heritage, and getting behind mighty clubs which represent the heart and soul of a very important city and legacy. It’s this factor that I think make LFC and ManU more bitter rivals than anything involving MC (the same would hold true if Everton ever got overwhelmingly skilled). Proximity always plays a big role in a good rivalry, but in this case, while ManU cope with City (who are very arguably the best team in the world right now), Liverpool and Everton share borders of the same freakin’ park, so the notion of having noisy (and often skilled) neighbors is very familiar to both United and Liverpool. With all that said, in your proposed scenario, the equivalent for Liverpool fans would be ManU and Everton squaring off, and while it’s unsportsmanlike and ungentlemanly, ultimately any LFC fan is gonna be hoping that the match taxes each team greatly, but ManU is more heavily thumped. They have the merchandise (jerseys, etc) and truly love the team and players. They realize it isn’t the fault of the players and coaches that their beloved team is no longer close to home. Some fans hate the team. They feel betrayed by the change of venue. I guess they will root for the next closest team (or maybe their ex-favorite team’s rivals), or become more interested in college football. But they’ll blame the players and coaches for their team leaving them. Is it fair? Depends. In the Rams case, I can’t think of many people talking about how they don’t want to leave (I may be wrong, as I am not an avid follower of the team) while in the Chargers case, Philip Rivers and most of the players voiced their opinion about not wanting to leave. Very emotional. I must say. As a person that lives about an hour outside of Los Angeles, I am now a Rams fan. Used to like them, but since they’re in Los Angeles now, I will call myself a fan. Same with the Chargers if they move. Wouldn’t with the Raiders though… But my Eagles are still my #1. Just a personal aside to also show the feelings of the city’s people that are receiving the team. However I know people here that will not root for the Rams or Chargers because they already have their favorite team and location doesn’t mean anything to them. Fair enough. We do have a decent fan following in India, but it’s nowhere near the level of clubs like United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea. We became super successful (yeah, most of us non-brits really are just glory hunters) comparatively recently so the number of fans in the country is understandably not very high. Due to this, most of our fans also belong to the biggest cities in India. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore even have their own Facebook City fan pages, where they interact with the local City fans. And last, but certainly not the least, I am sure our fan numbers are going to rise at an exponential pace, given the attractive style of football we play, all the while having the top most players in the world, and none other than Pep fooking Guardiola to manage us. Trophies will come, and so will the fans. It’s been 6 years now since I’ve been supporting Manchester United now,like I even remember me convincing my dad to get me an United Merchandise but no,Now I’m a student but I earn from my Internships to purchase em’ by my own money . So, it’s been such a journey from when I was kid I unfortunately couldn’t see much of Sir Alex Ferguson Glory era but I still believed in Managers like Louise Van Gaal and the players like Martial,Lingard(cz he came from youth setup) etc and I still support them when they don’t have much of Glory in recent times . The reason is because Manchester United is deep in heart and brains both and of course we all bleed red lol ! But it’s been kinda one sided love story nowadays wherein I keep on paying my supporters club membership costs, I even asked one of my friend to bring me the latest (treble 99’) kit from UK for 2019–20 season. But at some point I think like it’s only me (US THE FANS) putting their pennies in the club and Not the club owners aka Glazers Family! It’s like they purchased the club on Debts and appointed a Chartered Accountant (Ed Woodward) to check transfers who brought in excellent sponsorships from an American Muscle Car company to Australian Tractor company to Indian Tyre company(Apolo Tyres) .
